1 Braid of locally grown sweetgrass. Hand grown, collected and braided by us in Williamstown, MA. Roughly 10" long

Sweetgrass is also known as: Hierochloe odorata or Anthoxanthum nitens, buffalo grass, bison grass, holy grass, manna grass, Mary’s grass, seneca grass, vanilla grass, "wacanga" (Lakota).

Sweetgrass is found both in Europe and North America/Turtle Island. The Latin name for sweetgrass is "hierchloe odorata" which is best translated as "sacred grass." In Germany it is called "Mariengras" (Holy Mary Grass), “luktegress/háissasuoidni/hajuheinä” (Nowegian/Sámi/Finnish).

The sweet vanilla-like fragrance due to the presence of coumarin.

North American and Northern European traditions are similar in their ceremonial usages - for the scent and for use in spirituality and prayer.

"Sweetgrass has slightly different significance in different communities. To the Anishinaabe Nation (Woodland Indians), it is believed to be the sacred hair of O’gushnan, Mother Earth, and is often braided; with the three sections representing mind, body, and soul. Some First Nations believe the three sections of the braid represent love, kindness and honesty. The Anishinaabe People follow very sacred traditions and believe that when one takes something from the Earth - for example when sweetgrass is picked - then an explanation to the spirit about why it is being picked and how it will be used is required. The explanation is often accompanied by an offering of tobacco in return for the generosity shown by the Earth and the plant which shared itself." (reference 1)

"In the Celtic tradition, this plant was strewn upon the floor and thresholds of homes and churches to release its smell and good fortune when walking upon it." (reference 2
