The Oldest German Spells by Alexander Sager

The Oldest German Spells: Historical Charms, Invocations, & Folk Healing by Alexander Sager “THUNDERER! HALLOWER OF THE PEOPLE!” Rendered into English by scholar Alexander Sager (Department of Germanic & Slavic Studies, University of Georgia), this atmospheric and beautiful book presents, for the first time, the earliest spells recorded in the northern continental Germanic languages.

These often mysterious and obscure charms, invocations, and instructions for folk healing provide a window into a lost world and its common concerns, from horse-healing to the threat of wounds, to monstrous worms and ancient gods. In these spells, a small trickle of a once great stream of everyday mysticism, continental Germanic paganism, and Christianity merge. Features beautiful original illustrations by Kevin Alexandrowicz (Archaic Growth).
